"Who ever practices Tai Chi will gain the pliability of a child, the health of a lumberjack and the peace of mind of a sage..."

The mission of the college is to assist all Australians to acquire these attributes.

Senior Instructor Margaret Rogers Print E-mail
Senior Instructor Snezana Dabic, Box Hill Centre, Celestial Tai Chi College AustraliaMargaret Rogers is a biochemist holding a Master of Science degree who, after working 20 years in research with CSIRO, took early retirement in 1988 to manage the family business after the death of her father. Shortly before her retirement (in 1987), she was on the Organizing Committee and Treasurer for the highly-successful Melbourne International Congress of the International Union of Leather Technicians and Chemists Societies.  She was also heavily involved for many years (1964 to 1989) with the Scout Association of Australia, rose to the position of Assistant Branch Commissioner for Cubs in Victoria, and was in charge of some 20,000 Cub Scouts and 3,000 Cub Leaders.

She plays the flute and is a member of the Victorian Flute Guild Committee and was Secretary of the Organizing Committee for the Melbourne Flute Festival in 1994. She was also on the Organizing Committee of the 11th Australian Flute Convention held in Melbourne in 2002 and is the Editor of the Guild’s regular magazine, the Flautist.  She is also on the Committee of Management of the Camberwell Community Centre, of which she was Secretary from 2001 to 2004 and is now its President.

In 1993, her husband became very ill and, needing to do some form of relaxation meditation, was attracted to Tai Chi after trying and rejecting other relaxation methods.  He started Tai Chi with Senior Master Eng Chor Khor (now Grand Master) in Camberwell and came home every Wednesday night relaxed and happy and proceeded to teach Margaret the steps he had learnt that evening.  At the end of the term, he enticed a very indifferent Margaret to attend a Park Lesson where she became “hooked” on Tai Chi.  In 1994, after finishing Level 6, she became a Trainee Instructor, helping Senior Master Eng Chor at his Wednesday evening Camberwell class (now held in Hawthorn) and his Saturday morning class (which has been held in various halls in Camberwell South, Glen Iris and finally Ashburton).

In 1996, Margaret became an Instructor with the College, taking over the Ashburton class while still being an Assistant Instructor at the Hawthorn class with Grand Master Eng Chor, and was then appointed a Senior Instructor in 2007.

In 1997, the College was asked to run Tai Chi classes for the Camberwell Community Centre and Margaret has run classes there ever since, with some of the original students still being involved.  She runs one 1 hour Qi Gong class and four 1 hour Tai Chi classes, 3 mornings a week for the Centre. The Camberwell Community Centre was set up by the local Council to meet the needs of the community; the Council provides the premises and funding for a Manager and all other costs are recouped by the activities provided.  The Council is actively encouraging exercise classes for our aging population and these Tai Chi classes are within these guidelines.

She also runs a Qi Gong class for the Balwyn North Senior Citizens Club under the auspices of the Boroondara Council Aged Care Department and Tai Chi classes (2 hours) at the Applewood Retirement Village in Doncaster.  For several years, she ran Tai Chi classes for the Boroondara Community Health Centre as part of their falls prevention program.  She has also run classes in primary and secondary schools for students and teachers and also tertiary classes for students of Chinese Medicine when Grand Master Eng Chor has been overseas.

Margaret’s instructing role takes up Monday to Thursday morning and Saturday morning as well as Monday afternoon and Wednesday evening and she indulges herself by running a park lesson on Sunday morning at 8.30 am at the Bowen Street Gardens in Camberwell where, with other like-minded Tai Chi stalwarts, she practices all the routines she has learned.

Margaret teaches the following routines in her classes: Traditional 108 Movement Yang Style Tai Chi, Beijing 24, Yang 32 Sword, Chen Sword, Flute,  Fan, Shibashi – 18 Form Qi Gong (Sets 1&2), Warrior Lohan Qi Gong, Lotus, Golden Treasures, and Dao Yin.

She also has a National Police Certificate for Employment in the Child Care/Education sector.

Margaret is the proud mother of a son, Sheldon Davis, who is a Senior Engineer at Toyota and a daughter, Carolyn Davis, who is a Senior Art Director at an advertising agency.  She also has two grandchildren, Imogen who is 7 years old and Noah who is 4.
