Park Lessons - What can I expect?
Fresh air, new Chi
At the end of every term the college provides two free park lessons, one on a Saturday at Malvern and the other on a Sunday at Fairfield.

If you haven’t been to a park lesson before, I can highly recommend the experience, if you have been, then you already know of the benefits coming together with others from various centres and exercising in the open air brings with it. There is little more exhilarating yet at the same time relaxing as Tai Chi in the park.

The format for park lessons is tried and tested. The lessons commence with gentle warm ups. Park lessons provide the opportunity to practice exercises you may not have seen before. At the Fairfield park lesson in March, Senior

Limbering up
Master Eng Chor  guided us through some gentle limbering up exercises including Lotus. This was then followed by some TAO YIN Chi Quong exercises. These may have been new to some, and certainly had interesting names, which described the movements, such as White Crane Greats the Morning Sun, Monkey Presents Fruit, Elephant Curls Trunk, Tiger Crouches and Grand Master Dusting Robe. With names like these you start to get an understanding of the origins and Tai Chi’s links with the natural world.

Now its time to practice Tai Chi together working through the levels. As we complete the level you are up to we break off into groups until eventually there are groups of beginners, all six levels, revision and weapons all refining and practicing lessons learnt during the term.

One of the many strengths of coming together with instructors and students from other centres is the variety. Different instructors emphasize different elements of Tai Chi and it’s good to get a different perspective.

Mixed Levels
Mixed levels
Its often the case that we struggle with the last few moves in each level as they have been practiced the least. Park lessons are wonderful for cementing each level.

We then come back together into one large group for cool down exercises, and often a demonstration of Tai Chi and weapons forms such as sword, fan or staff.

I can’t speak highly enough of the benefits of coming together in the park and practicing Tai Chi as part of a large group. There are many Tai Chi devotees and the park lessons are an ideal opportunity to meet new friends.
