“Softness triumphs over hardness, feebleness over strength. What is more malleable is always superior over that which is immoveable.

This is the principle of controlling things by going along with them, of mastery through adaptation.”

Werribee Weerama display

ImageThe Werribee and Pt Cook Celestial Tai Chi groups participated in the annual Weerama Festival on Sunday, 4 March on a beautiful warm sunny day.  We assembled at 10.30 am for the parade.  Everyone was very excited and it was not long before we were walking down Watton street waving our Celestial banners, snapping our fans and giving out brochures.   On passing the main tent of distinguished visitors, we made a point of lowering our flags and making our Tai Chi salutation.  Prime Minister Julia Gillard, our local Federal Member reciprocated our gesture most warmly.

During the day, we also manned a stand at the Festival. Image Many people asked us general questions about Tai Chi and about classes in our local area.   John Sindoni led our performances at various times around the stand and also during a short performance on the main stage. (More pictures )

The day was very enjoyable, beneficial for all who participated and we hope to see some new faces at our centre in the near future.

Tai Chi in Vietnam and Malaysia - Celestial College Cultural Tour 2011
ImageVietnam is a lush tropical country featuring a history of Imperial Dynasty’s, a French Colonial past, the recent war with the USA and the reunification of the north and south into a communist country.  The people are kind and gentle and the cuisine is delicious.  The shopping is also worthwhile.

There were 10 of us in the tour group led by Grand Master Eng Chor Khor.  Every morning usually at 7am we practiced our Tai Chi with the Grand Master who also gave us lessons in a new (to us) Qi Qong form (Win Chun) every day.

Tai Chi a Regular Feature @ Professional Development Conference at NMIT
ImageTai Chi has become a regular workshop at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE’s Faculty of Business annual conferences, organised for teaching and management staff on Preston Campus of NMIT. This year the key conference theme was: Triumph in a Competitive Education Industry.   The guest speakers and participants discussed virtual worlds, effective industry partnerships and student engagement while looking at demographic trends and influences in Australia and globally.

It was a pleasure to run a Tai Chi workshop again with many a staff member returning every year and with new eager learners, who wanted to have a go for the first time. Titled Relax, refocus and rejuvenate with Tai Chi and Chi Kung, the workshop offered the basic steps in traditional Yang Style Tai Chi, Qi Gong, self-massage and meditation. Image

The participants wanted to learn and experience artistic, gentle exercise and breathing techniques to alleviate stress and incorporate balance in their busy work schedule and lifestyle. Their smiles, questions and relaxed posture testified to their satisfaction and immediate benefits of Tai Chi. Having experienced their body moving in a new way, some promised to return and some decided to join a class so they could feel ‘energised and relaxed again’.

Our Trip to the 4th International Martial Arts Games in Tallinn, Estonia

Grand Master Eng Chor, Andy Law, Zaineida Calderon and myself arrived Tallinn on 22 February, 2011 on a bright and sunny afternoon.  The pilot announced that the ground temperature in the city was -12C.  It didn’t take long to get our luggage.  Image We came out to the arrival hall to the welcoming representatives of the Games Organizing Committee. They whizzed us away to our hotel – the Clarion Euroopa.  We certainly felt the freezing cold air the minute we left the heated airport terminal.

The Clarion Euroopa would be our home for our entire stay in Tallinn.  We would have our 3 meals there buffet style.  It’s a very nice hotel situated near the port area; however, couldn’t see any water though because it’s all frozen.  The hotel is right next to a small shopping mall with a supermarket.  It’s also quite close to the old town, a good 20 minutes walk.  Everywhere we looked, it was white.  The streets were all very icy.  Walking on ice certainly posed some challenges.

The next morning, we did some Tai Chi practice before breakfast.  We continued our practice before breakfast throughout our visit.  Then we got our badges with photo done.  We were then informed that we would be demonstrating at the opening ceremony with a 5 minute performanceGrand Master Eng Chor selected the Beijing 24 form and the appropriate music to fit in with the timing of the performance.

Tai Chi for Business Educators at NMIT

Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE’s Faculty of Business Imagerecently had its annual Professional Development Conference 2010 with a theme “Facilitating Excellence in Learning”. The guest speakers and participants discussed 21st century skills for new teaching and learning environments, focusing on quality through flexibility.

This year again they invited the Celestial Tai Chi College to conduct a workshop. Titled Tai Chi & Chi Kung – refocus with the ultimate form of exercise, the workshop offered participants the basic steps in traditional Yang Style Tai Chi, Chi Kung, self-massage and meditation. With an open mind, they experienced gentle exercises and breathing techniques and learned about their benefits for the body, concentration and general well-being.

It was interesting to see how some of last year’s participants Imageeagerly returned while some of the others enrolled in Tai Chi classes around Melbourne, including the Celestial Tai Chi College.  Feedback was very positive, ‘I love Tai Chi, it relaxes me’, ‘my favourite martial arts exercise’, ‘no tension, I feel energized’, ‘makes me feel happy’, were amongst other comments shared by the participants after the workshop.

Tai Chi at the Langham Hotel Melbourne

Celestial Tai Chi at the Langham Hotel - The Chuan SpaRecently the College was asked to perform Tai Chi at the official opening of the Chuan Spa at the Langham Hotel Melbourne. The Chuan Spa provides services "founded on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine", thus Tai Chi was the perfect accompaniment.

Eight instructors, including Master Chin Min, entertained guests for nearly two hours with Tao Yin, Shibashi, Lotus, Lohan and selected Tai Chi  and weapon forms. The evening was thoroughly enjoyable, if a little chilly, and was topped off nicely with a glass of bubbly and some  Asian-inspired canapes.

Tai Chi for Primary School
Celestial Tai Chi College has started teaching tai chi to primary school children through the 'Active After School Communities program'. Around 25 Chatham Primary School children from prep to grade 6 have enjoyed learning the lotus, shibashi and tao yin along with the odd  game of all-in tag and musical statues (with tai chi music and  postures of course).  The AASC program is funded by the Federal Government and aims to keep kids active after school for a full hour by offering non-traditional activities like fencing, hip hop dancing, and tai chi. Doing tai chi for an hour is a big ask for the kids, but they manage incredibly well and even remember the moves well enough to  request them the following week.

The Reward of the Challenge
Celestial Tai Chi sword - Neptune Searching the Sea
Neptune Searching the Sea
Two and a half years ago my friend Maureen and I decided to give Tai Chi a go. We headed off to the Mulgrave Centre on Thursday night and recieved a very warm welcome from Instructor Yan Ding and her dedicated Assistant Instructor, Stephen Petzold.

After one lesson we were hooked, but had to wonder if we would ever learn after the first moves of that lesson. We diligently progressed through levels 1 and 2,struggled through 3 and 4 and then it seemed to get a little easier through levels 5 and 6.
