4th International Martial Arts Games in 2011

The 4th International Martial Arts Games will be held in Tallinn, Estonia on February 24-27, 2011. Grand Master Eng Chor Khor is on the IMGC (International Martial Arts Game Committee) Executive Board. He will be leading a delegation of students and Instructors from all Martial Arts Organizations in Australia, including the Celestial Tai Chi College to this event. Image

Last year the event was held in Pyongyang, North Korea and was attended by delegations from all over the world and the College. Grand Master Eng Chor Khor led an Australian delegation consisting of members of the Australian National Martial Art Games Committee to these Games. Many of the Australian delegates were from the Celestial Tai Chi College and, led by Grand Master Eng Chor Khor, they participated in a demonstration of Tai Chi Chen for all the officials and martial art enthusiasts attending. The IMGC “Martial Arts World” (No.7, Issue 3, 2009) states that the Australian delegation “took part in the demonstration to show the elegant movements of Tai Qi Chen, which attracted most popularity with resonant applauses.”

Tai Chi at the Langham Hotel Melbourne

Celestial Tai Chi at the Langham Hotel - The Chuan SpaRecently the College was asked to perform Tai Chi at the official opening of the Chuan Spa at the Langham Hotel Melbourne. The Chuan Spa provides services "founded on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine", thus Tai Chi was the perfect accompaniment.

Eight instructors, including Master Chin Min, entertained guests for nearly two hours with Tao Yin, Shibashi, Lotus, Lohan and selected Tai Chi  and weapon forms. The evening was thoroughly enjoyable, if a little chilly, and was topped off nicely with a glass of bubbly and some  Asian-inspired canapes.

Tai Chi for Primary School
Celestial Tai Chi College has started teaching tai chi to primary school children through the 'Active After School Communities program'. Around 25 Chatham Primary School children from prep to grade 6 have enjoyed learning the lotus, shibashi and tao yin along with the odd  game of all-in tag and musical statues (with tai chi music and  postures of course).  The AASC program is funded by the Federal Government and aims to keep kids active after school for a full hour by offering non-traditional activities like fencing, hip hop dancing, and tai chi. Doing tai chi for an hour is a big ask for the kids, but they manage incredibly well and even remember the moves well enough to  request them the following week.

The Reward of the Challenge
Celestial Tai Chi sword - Neptune Searching the Sea
Neptune Searching the Sea
Two and a half years ago my friend Maureen and I decided to give Tai Chi a go. We headed off to the Mulgrave Centre on Thursday night and recieved a very warm welcome from Instructor Yan Ding and her dedicated Assistant Instructor, Stephen Petzold.

After one lesson we were hooked, but had to wonder if we would ever learn after the first moves of that lesson. We diligently progressed through levels 1 and 2,struggled through 3 and 4 and then it seemed to get a little easier through levels 5 and 6.

Since 2001, my Monday mornings have been spent at the Box Hill Centre with Senior Instructor Beng Yan, learning Yang Style Tai Chi Levels 1 to 6, Fan, Sword, Flute, Beijing 24 and 42 and any other delight she has to offer. My fitness, balance and wellbeing have been the beneficiaries and, at 60, I believe Tai Chi has helped me to keep me very fit for my age.
